Brava is proud to do business with some of the most talented and creative Salon Professionals in the industry. Here we share Jody Haug's story of her Local Salon Success. We hope this offers you some inspiration and connection while providing a Spotlight to let her talent and business savvy shine.
Can you tell us a little about your family? How do they inspire you? I have been married to my wonderful husband, Chuck, for 25 years. We have 2 kiddos, Alex (24) is going into his senior year at UW Oshkosh for Environmental Science. Our daughter Cassidy (22) is a recent graduate of UW Whitewater and will be starting her teaching career at McFarland High school this fall. Being a stylist has allowed me the flexibility to be very involved in my kids' lives.
How many years in the Beauty Industry? I have been a licensed cosmetologist since 1997 and have owned my salon for the past 9 years. In high school, I excelled at styling and braiding hair. Cosmetology school was less expensive than nursing school at the time so I chose Cosmetology and fell in love with different aspects of the industry.
What is your specialty and passion in the salon? My passions behind the chair have changed and evolved over the years. I was blessed to be part of Leo’s Salon my first 14 years where we were one of the top wedding hair salons. Being a part of someone’s special day and making it a great experience was very rewarding. Cutting and Color work were soon to follow.
What is the biggest lesson or challenge you have faced in your career and how did you overcome it? I have always believed that you are who you surround yourself with. I have had some AMAZING co-workers over the years. I took a management position at an Aveda salon and it turned into my biggest challenge and growth of my career. Teaching my skill sets to new stylists had me rethinking why I do what I do. Learning the management side of the industry gave me a better perspective of where my strengths are and where I could use improvement.
Any advice for stylists who are just starting out? To any new stylists I would suggest making yourself a sponge. Take it all in, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Take constructive criticism, ask to assist. You can be great at what you do… but if you can’t form some kind of connection with the client you will have a hard time succeeding.
What are some of your favorite REF products? Some of my favorite REF products include Stay Smooth, Curl Power and Flexible Spray.
Why do you like doing business with Brava and are there any ways we have helped you in your business? Brava to me feels like family, I have known Jim a LONG time now. He truly has our best interest in mind to make us successful. The education team is so knowledgeable and friendly.
What are you looking forward to? I look forward to many years of continued success. I hope to do a class at the new Brava Destination! Making people feel and look their best will always be one of my greatest accomplishments.
